About Institute of Education Sciences, Wuhan University

The Institute of Education Sciences at Wuhan University (IESWH) is recognized as a leader in graduate programs in higher education, teaching and learning, and education research. In July 2003, Wuhan University established the School of Education Sciences based on the former Institute of Higher Education. In November 2014, the school then became the Institute of Education Sciences. These changes were all in keeping with Wuhan University’s excellent academic reputation and ongoing improvements over more than 100 years.

IESWH is committed to enhancing the social, economic, political and cultural wellbeing of individuals and communities through leadership in teaching, research and advocacy. Since 1995, we have offered master’s degree programs in Higher Education, Educational Economics and Administration, Curriculum and Pedagogy, and Educational Philosophy. In 2007, the Institute began to recruit doctoral students in Educational Economics and Administration. In 2008, it was approved as a professional degree authorization point for a master’s degree in education. In 2013, it was approved as a master’s degree authorization point for the first-level discipline of education. There are currently more than 180 full-time and part-time students enrolled in the Institute. We have three sub-institutes including the Institute of Higher Education, the Institute of Educational Philosophy, and the Institute of Curriculum and Pedagogy. We also have a Center for Master of Education. The Institute promotes the training of students in the first-level discipline and have established more than 10 course groups, including compulsory courses for all graduates of the first-level discipline, professional courses, and courses with English as a medium of instruction. In addition, the Institute establishes supervisory groups and strives to improve moral education and quality of talent training. Wuhan University’s spirit of “Self-improvement, Perseverance, Truth-seeking & Innovation” is actively expressed by our faculty.

IESWH is an extraordinary community of educators who are dedicated to the disciplinary fields of educational theories, reform of curriculum and pedagogy, and higher education management. Currently, there are 15 full-time faculty members, including five professors, seven associate professors, and three lecturers (assistant professors), all holding a PhD degree. Moreover, a number of well-known scholars and experts both home and abroad are working here as visiting professors or part-time researchers. Nearly 60% of the full-time faculty members have international education experience. Four are members of national steering committees related to education. In addition, many of the faculty serve as heads of academic organizations and deputy editors or editorial board members of international journals.

Following contemporary global trends and prioritizing innovation, the Institute strives to create an optimal academic atmosphere and encourage interactions between education disciplines and other disciplines. Based on secondary disciplines, the Institute has formed several unique disciplinary directions focused on innovation: innovating institution governance from the perspective of governance modernization, optimizing education governance through supply-side reforms, transforming curriculum and teaching supported by information technology, and enhancing core literacy education, highlighting equality and quality. The Institute has also established a new form of cross-fertilization of the disciplinary system known as “Education+”, while actively creating academic activities such as the High-end Academic Forum on Education Supply-side Reform, Luojia Spring and Autumn Education Forum, the Contemporary Education Salon, Symposium on excellent Teaching and Undergraduate Talent Training and the Contemporary Education Research Series.

In the past five years, over 30 national or provincial educational projects have been conducted at ISEWH, more than 20 monographs and over 300 journal articles have been published. From 2018 to 2021, the faculty has published nine high-quality papers in top journals such as Jiaoyu Yanjiu (Education Research) and eight monographs, won second prize for a national teaching award, and conducted 17 national or provincial projects with funding of more than RMB 2 million. The faculty also received horizontal funding of more than RMB 6 million. IESWH also actively participates in educational reform consultation projects at all levels of government, social organizations, and enterprises and institutions, serving in national and provincial academic organizations, and carrying out various forms of international exchanges and international cooperation. At the same time, we have worked to provide extensive theoretical support for the university’s reforms and have played an important advisory role by highlighting the Institute’s traditional strengths in higher education research and conducting research around the practice of higher education, especially in the evolution of Wuhan University.

Inheriting the distinguished history and fine tradition of Wuhan University’s education discipline, along with the modernization of Chinese education and the creation of “Double first-class” universities, the Institute is guided by Xi Jinping’s concept of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. Thus, we are actively exploring a new model for the development of the education discipline in comprehensive universities. While following the open, research-oriented and international development path, the Institute makes concerted efforts to contribute to the creation of a modern education theory system with Chinese characteristics.
